Burden of care of primary caregivers for hemodialysis patients at Thanh Hoa General Hospital

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 186 primary caregivers at the Hemodialysis Center and the Department of Nephrology of Thanh Hoa General Hospital to describe the burden experienced by caregivers of hemodialysis patients in 2025. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire that included socio-demographic information, patient characteristics, and the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). The results showed a median burden score of 45 (IQR: 37 – 51) out of a total of 88 points. Most caregivers experienced a moderate to severe load (62.9%). Higher burden scores were found among caregivers who were parents of the patients, had low educational levels, homemakers or retirees, had low income, and had provided long term care. The findings highlight the need for support programs to reduce the burden among high-risk caregiver groups.
