Burden of care among primary caregivers of patients with end-stage lung cancer at Thanh Hoa Oncology Hospital, 2025 – 2026

Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 173 primary caregivers of patients with end-stage lung cancer at Thanh Hoa Oncology Hospital during the period 2025 – 2026, using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-22). The results showed that the mean caregiver burden score was 27.56 ± 12.68; 48.0% of caregivers experienced a moderate burden, and 16.1% had a severe or higher level of burden. Multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that spousal relationship, sole caregiver responsibility, and patients’ level of dependency were significant factors associated with increased caregiver burden. In conclusion, primary caregivers of patients with end-stage lung cancer experience a considerable burden and require appropriate support as part of comprehensive care.
