Associated factors to dry eyes symptoms among users electronic screens
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to determine the associated factors with dry eyes symptoms among users of electronic screen devices. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 participants attending Dr. Duc Eye Clinic from February 2025 to August 2025, participants self-reported through an available questionnaire. Pearson’s Chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with dry eye symptoms. The proportion of participants at risk of dry eye disease (Ocular Surface Disease Index > 12) was 81.5%, of whom 57.3% had moderate-to-severe dry eye symptoms. The most commonly used devices were smartphones (52.0%) and tablets (5.0%). The mean screen distance was 34.62 ± 12.98 cm. In the multivariable logistic regression model, tablet use (OR = 6.23; 95% CI: 1.63 – 25.8), smartphone use (OR = 6.02; 95% CI: 1.96 – 19.8), and laptop use (OR = 2.82; 95% CI: 1.12 – 7.61) were significantly associated with moderate-to-severe dry eye symptoms compared with desktop computer use. Screen time (hours/day) was also associated with dry eye symptoms (OR = 1.24 per hour; 95% CI: 1.12 – 1.38). Screen time and the type of electronic device used are associated with an increased tendency for dry eye symptoms in participants. Increasing awareness of dry eye risks among electronic screen device users through educational posters in clinics is recommended.
