Efficacy of Bismuth-containing and non-bismuth regimens for helicobacter pylori eradication in children

Abstract
The eradication efficacy of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in Vietnamese children varies across treatment regimens and geographic regions. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of a bismuth-containing quadruple therapy and a triple therapy in 88 children with H. pylori -associated gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. A randomized controlled trial conducted at Can Tho Children’s Hospital showed that the eradication rates of the bismuth-quadruple therapy and the triple therapy were 72.7% and 63.6%, respectively, in the intention-to-treat analysis, and 80.0% and 70.0%, respectively, in the per-protocol analysis, with no statistically significant difference. The overall treatment adherence rate was 94.3%; clinical symptom improvement after treatment was high, and adverse effects were recorded in 8.0% of patients, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p > 0.05). Age, endoscopic lesions, and adverse effects were associated with H. pylori eradication failure; specifically, age < 10 years old, peptic ulcer lesions, and the presence of adverse effects were associated with a higher rate of treatment failure.
