Morphological examination of impacted lower wisdom tooth roots using conebeam computed tomography

Abstract
A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 146 patients with 251 impacted mandibular wisdom teeth at the Department of -Odonto-Stomatology, Bach Mai Hospital from January to May 2026. Medical records and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were utilized to assess root morphology in relation to surrounding structures. Research indicated that the number of wisdom teeth (38 and 48) was evenly distributed between both genders; most mandibular wisdom teeth presented with two roots. Periapical bone density predominantly belonged to Misch's bone density classifications D3 and D4 . The proportion of mandibular wisdom tooth roots close proximity to contacting with the IAN was high. Patients over 60 years old exhibited a 74% lower risk of a close-roots -to -IAN relationship compared to younger cohorts. No statistically significant correlation was found between gender and the relationship between mandibular wisdom tooth roots and IAN.
