Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP)
regarding oral healthcare and their relationship with having gingivitis among first-year and third-year
dental students at Hanoi Medical University during 2020 - 2021. Most of the students (90.4%) had
gingivitis and about half of the students (49.6%) had an oral hygiene index-simple (OHI-S). Most
(88.8%) of the students had good attitude, while only 44% and 41.6% had good level of practice
and knowledge, respectively. Having good level of knowledge, attitudes and practices is related
to the gingival condition. Although third-year students reported higher level of KAP compared
to the first-year students, their rate of gingivitis was 94.64%, which was higher than that of the
first-years. Overall, the students’ attitudes towards oral healthcare are good, but their knowledge
and practices are inadequate. It is necessary to enhance knowledge and practices relating to
oral healthcare to improve gingival health among dental students at Hanoi Medical University.
