Abstract

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions, although are rare incidence but the mortality rate can be up to 5-30%. SJS and TEN are classified as a spectrum of diseases but clinically, TEN is more severe than SJS. This study was conducted from January 2018 to October 2019 to compare some clinical and paraclinical characteristics of SJS and TEN. The results showed that the rate of pneumonia in the TEN group was higher than that in the SJS group (p < 0.05); the rate of oral mucous membrane lesions in the SJS group was higher than that in the TEN group (p < 0.05); the rate of allopurinol (as a causative drug) in the SJS group was higher than that in the TEN group (p < 0.05); the time of hospitalization of the TEN group was longer than that of the SJS group (p < 0.01). Serum levels of IFN-γ of the TEN group were higher than those of the SJS group (p < 0.001). Serum levels of granulysin, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 did not differ between the two groups.
