Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the preferred method of dialysis for children requiring renal replacement therapy, with peritonitis being one of the most common complications of PD. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and microbiology of peritonitis in children on PD in Vietnam National Children's Hospital from 1/2019 to 6/2021. Results: A total of 52 patients (48.1% male) with a mean age 8.98 ± 3.92 years old were recruited in the study. 21 children (40.4%) developed peritonitis, with 9 patients experienced two or more episodes of peritonitis. There were 39 episodes of peritonitis (0.64 episodes/patient-year), common within the first year of PD initiation with 28.2% of episodes of peritonitis occurring between 3 and 6 months. Gram-positive bacteria were responsible for 14 out of 17 (82.3%) episodes of culture-positive peritonitis, of which Staphylococcus aureus was the main isolated species accounting for 64.7%. The rate of culture-negative episodes was very high at 56.4%. Conclusion: Peritonitis is a common complication in children with PD.
