Abstract

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common sexual dysfunctions in men. Many tools and questionnaires have been designed and studied which showed the critical role in clinical practice to evaluate the severity and patient’s response to treatment. One of them is the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) - 5. We conducted this study to validate the Vietnamese version of IIEF - 5 which would facilitate diagnosing and tracking the progress of ED patients in Vietnam. 154 men were recruited when presented to the Department of Andrology and Sexual Medicine at Hanoi Medical University’s Hospital. Patients could read and answer the Vietnamese version of IIEF - 5 independently . Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. Test - retest was done in 37 untreated patients who revisited the clinic after 2 - 4 weeks. Pearson coefficient and intra - class correlation (ICC) were used to detect the reliability of the questionnaire. Internal consistency of the Vietnamese version of IIEF - 5 was excellent with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.91. Reliability of the questionnaire was excellent with the Pearson coefficient > 0.86 (p < 0.01) for all questions and ICC = 0.97. At the cutpoint of 21, the sensitivity and specificity of IIEF - 5 on diagnosis ED were 96.6% and 60.9%, respectively. IIEF - 5 could be used to diagnose ED with AUC = 0.942. Findings from this study showed the reliability and applicability of the Vietnamese version of IIEF - 5 on diagnosing ED.
