Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted to describe medication adherence and identify factors associated with non-adherence among outpatients with type 2 diabetes at Thanh Hoa Endocrinology Hospital in 2023. A total of 300 patients were recruited from May to November 2023. Medication adherence was assessed using the MMAS-8 scale. The medication adherence rate was 69.3%. The most common non-adherent behaviors included feeling burdened by long-term treatment (39.3%) and occasionally forgetting to take medication (32.7%). Univariate analysis identified non-adherence to dietary recommendations, number of antidiabetic medications, combined oral antidiabetic drug–insulin therapy, and fear of complications as factors associated with medication non-adherence (p < 0.05). In the multivariable logistic regression model, only non-adherence to dietary recommendations remained significantly associated with medication non-adherence after adjustment for potential confounders. Overall, medication adherence remained suboptimal, highlighting the need for multicomponent interventions, individualized counseling, and support for self-management behaviors.
