Risk factors for intrauterine growth restriction: A case–control study

Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) at Dong Nai General Hospital. A case–control study was conducted on 95 pregnant women with IUGR and 190 controls. The results showed that the IUGR group had significantly higher proportions of urban residence, history of IUGR, underweight status, primiparity, gestational weight gain below 12 kg, anemia, and oligohydramnios compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that urban residence (OR = 5.283; 95% CI: 1.568 – 17.597; p = 0.007), history of IUGR (OR = 62.735; 95% CI: 3.665 – 1073.80; p = 0.004), and gestational weight gain below 12 kg (OR = 23.941; 95% CI: 7.657 – 74.854; p < 0.001) were associated with an increased risk of IUGR. In contrast, fundal height (OR = 0.504; p < 0.001) and each 1 cm increase in abdominal circumference (OR = 0.635; 95% CI: 0.537 – 0.750; p < 0.001) were associated with a decreased risk. Overall, urban residence, history of IUGR, and inadequate gestational weight gain were identified as significant risk factors for IUGR, while increased fundal height and abdominal circumference were associated with a reduced risk of this condition.
