Non-dipping blood pressure and associated factors in hypertensive patients at Huu Nghi hospital

Abstract

Hypertension is a global health burden and one of the leading causes of mortality and disability. Among hypertensive patients, non-dipping blood pressure is considered a poor prognostic indicator for cardiovascular events and mortality. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 110 hospitalized patients with hypertension at the Department of General Internal Medicine A, Huu Nghi Hospital, from January 2023 to September 2023 to assess the prevalence of non-dipping blood pressure and associated factors. All patients underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and their dipping status was classified according to the 2023 ESH/ESC criteria. The investigated factors included age, gender, body mass index, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, history of stroke, and the timing of antihypertensive medication intake. The results showed that the average age of the study group was 77.1 ± 8.9 years old, with a very high rate of non-dipping blood pressure (82.7%). Patients over 70 years of age are significant associated with non-dipping blood pressure, while other factors such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, dyslipidemia, and taking medication once in the morning tend to increase the risk of hypotension.
