10. Clinical, paraclinical, mortality rates in acute pulmonary embolism patients with cancer

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe clinical, paraclinical characteristics, early mortality in patients of acute pulmonary embolism with cancer. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of 39 patients. The diagnosis of acute pulmonary embolism was confirmed in the presence of thrombosis in pulmonary artery on contrast-enhanced computed tomography. Of 39 patients, 24 patients (61.5%) had pre-existing cancer before being diagnosed with acute pulmonary embolism, 15 patients (38.5%) were hospitalized with acute pulmonary embolism and cancer was discovered concomitantly. Lung cancer accounted for 43.6% (17/39), where 74.3% (29/39) patients had distant metastases. The mortality rate in patients with acute pulmonary embolism with cancer after 7 days of treatment was 4/39 (10.3%), and after 30 days was 12/39 (30.8%). The sPESI score was higher in the group of patients who passed away within 30 days.
