Abstract

Cord blood (CB) has become an extremely valuable source of stem cells for regenerative medicine. The collection of CB always bears a risk of low collected volume and microbiological contamination, which affects storage and future use. Therefore, this study was conducted to describe the characteristics of CBs and explore the relationship of maternal, neonatal and obstetric factors to CB collection results. Cross-sectional descriptive study on 434 CB samples collected at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from October 2021 to June 2023. All collected CB were with the private purpose. The ratio of boys/girls with CB collected was 1.6. The average volume of CB was 85.7 ± 27.2ml. Microbiological testing recorded that 1.8% of CB samples were positive (fungi, bacteria). The positive CB had a lower average volume than the negative group (69.3ml vs 86.2ml, p < 0.01). Factors associated with low collected CB volume include maternal systemic disease, lower birth weight (< 3000gram), younger gestational age (< 37 weeks), and female. Lower CB volume significantly increases the risk of CB contamination. Other factors such as maternal obstetric diseases, collector, and type of birth have not been found to be significant in predicting low collected CB volume or infection.
