Abstract

The study aimed to describe swallowing impairment and its association with quality of life in patients after thyroid cancer surgery at Bach Mai Hospital. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 184 patients who had undergone thyroidectomy. The Swallowing Impairment Score Index (SIS-6) was used to assess swallowing disorders, while quality of life was measured using the The EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-level questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) and the EQ visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS). Results showed that the average age of participants was 48.8 ± 12.8 years old; the majority were female (75%), 94.6% underwent open surgery and 76.5% were diagnosed during routine health check-ups. The mean SIS-6 score was 9.2 ± 4.3. The average quality of life score by the EQ-5D-5L and EQ-VAS was 0,732 ± 0,151 and 70.76 ± 12.72 respectively. There was a statistically significant association between swallowing impairment and quality of life assessed by EQ-VAS (p < 0.05), as well as between swallowing impairment and all dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L (p < 0.05).
