Knowledge and habits of handwashing with soap among residents in five provinces in Northern Viet nam, 2020

Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to describe knowledge and habits of hand hygiene with soap. Surveys about handwashing were administered among 1000 residents in five provinces: Son La, Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, and Ninh Thuan in 2020. Questionnaires and checklists were used to assess and calculate scores for handwashing practice. The participants washed their hands after using the toilet (69.5%), before eating (47.5%), and after coming home from work (32.5%). Surveys of households indicated that most families have water (96.8%) or water and soap (89.4%). People of other ethnicities had better knowledge of handwashing conditions than the Kinh people (OR=1.87; 95%CI: 1.17 – 3.01); high school students had more handwashing knowledge than those who were illiterate (OR=2.79; 95%CI: 1.35 – 5.79); people working in other occupations were less likely to have good knowledge of handwashing compared to those working in farming (OR=0.43; 95%CI: 0.26 – 0.71). Communication activities should be continued and maintained to improve people's handwashing hygene.
